Promote your blog

After you set up your blog you want people to see it, right?

Maybe you only want family and friends to see it, so you give them your blog address or url, like this: eslblogs.englishclub.com/username

But if you want everyone to see it, you can do better than that.

First of all you can add it to search engines and directories like Google or Yahoo:
http://www.google.com
http://www.yahoo.com

Don’t forget, many of these search engines have websites for your own country, where you can add your blog in your own language too. For example http://www.google.fr in France or http://www.google.jp in Japan.

And you can also add it to several pages on EnglishClub.com:
http://www.englishclub.com/esl-forums/
http://www.englishclub.com/webguide/ESL_Blogs/

Don’t forget, you can make links to your blog AND to individual posts.

The more links you make to your blog, the more chance that people will come by, read it, recommend it and leave comments.

If you really don’t want anyone to see your blog, go to Options > Privacy and check “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors”. Now only people that you give the address or url to will find your blog.

hi. how can i remove my blog entries from google. i read something about the google url removal tool but it requires one to contact the webmaster first for, i guess, permission. can you help?

Actually, it’s just that I have revised some entries which I wasn’t happy with. Category used to be called LSE Daegu but I’ve changed it to My first Dos job - don’t really want to name and shame! I’ve switched off the button to allow my blog to be viewed on Google but that’s not really what I want. I googled the term LSE Daegu and it comes up a couple of times with 2-3 lines of my earlier posts and although the posts have been revised, I’d rather these terms didn’t come up on google when a search is done for this term. Too late, I guess?

    Advice much appreciated. Mike

Mike: The option to make your blog public or private is one of the options the you must complete during the sign-up process. It is also possible to configure this later through your dashboard. Once the cat is out of the bag it is very difficult to put it back in. If you have switched to private in dashboard, the Google links will probably wash out in due course. You could also change their urls of your posts (the slug) so they won’t be found by Google now that you’ve switched to private. However, you should be aware that even if your page no longer exists Google sometimes offer cached versions.

If, as you seem to say, you want your blog to be public rather than private–which indeed we understood to be your desire in the first place–then we are confused about how to help :)

no problem guys and thanks for your help!

i’m being unnecessarily skittish! It’s just shortened versions of a couple of old posts that come up on google and i didn’t slander anybody at my old school - just spelt out the truth in emotive language!

if anyone searches for lse daegu in google at the moment, they’ll see links to a these old “life of mike” posts and in the one or two lines of these posts you can actually see, i begin to give my old boss both barrels, ha, ha!

when you clink those links you get to my new edited versions which are more measured! i edited these posts and took out all references to the school’s name. (i never mentioned individuals by name anyway)

still, if you have the time, i’d like to learn how to change the slugs for the 6 posts in the category “lse daegu” which has now been changed to “my first dos job…”

cheers. and by the way i’m very impressed with the fast and efficient service on this site! excellent service!

When you write or post a blog there are various options down the right hand side of the screen. About half way down is “Post Slug”. This is normally filled in automatically with the title of your post (hyphens, no spaces). But you can changed it to anything you want. It forms the last part of the url for the post. You might want to change it for several reasons, such as you have a long title but want a short url, or to include the most appropriate keywords for search engines.
