Well the polution in Beijing is pretty bad. I have throat congestion constantly and so does my husband. However, for the short time the athletes are here, I don't think it will do them any permanent damage. Of course, if someone has asthma, they might be affected by it. John is especially sensitive to heavily polluted days. I won't notice it but he does. It burns his eyes and throat and makes it hard for him to breathe. Sometimes I think the countries are making a big thing out of this unnecessarily. However, if they are considering the competitive edge, breathing is a very important part of physical endurance.

It's too bad it's such a big issue but I wonder how it compares to other sites like Mexico City and Los Angeles, both polluted ciites. I guess we'd have to compare the statistics.

I agree. HOw petty that those people would use racial comments just because their contrymen were not as good as they wanted them to be. It's the worst show of poor sportsmanship. If you can't beat them at the sport, then try to attack them as a human being. How weak is that!? Those people need to get a life!

(by the way, nice blog.)

Yes it's true. Because China is still an enigma in many people's eyes, everyone will be watching to see what China is really like. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negative things people will be focusing on. In the west, however, that is part of progress, revealing the weaknesses so change can be made. That's the fuction of the free press. That's why when you read western newspapers they often report on bad news. For one thing, it's more interesting than good news. For another thing, it's how we bring about change.

Hopefully, China will not see itself as the victim of prejudice, but will be able to react honestly to honest assessments. Sometimes, more is known about China outside of China than inside. While inside China everyone has to put on a positive face, outside people are not under that constraint. While it may look like undue criticism to Chinese people, it's just honest reporting that seeks to expose a need. Americans certainly criticize themselves along with others in the world. It's just the nature of the press.

Good blog Jane! Keep reading and writing. You'll learn alot throught he experience.

Happy Spring Festival!
