LIGHT

Light and Colours

Why is the sky red during sunset?

Sky of red by eduardoMoraes.

During the day, the dust  and the air particles carry out the color blue but at sunset only the red light reaches us. This also holds true during sunrise because the distance travelled by sunlight is the same at sunset.

The sunlight consists of seven colours, each has its own wavelenght. When the sun is lower in the sky during dusk or dawn sunlight has to travel farther before it reaches the earth.  All the other colours in light except red spread out before we see them and it’s only the red light which has the longest wavelenght reaches us.
