Getting your students to speak in pairwork

Here’s a little phrase sheet I made to give to your students

Speaking in pairwork / Small groupwork

When your teacher asks you to check your answers in pairs or groups or when you’re asked to discuss a question - speak in English, not Korean! This is your chance to practice and get ready for when the teacher asks you for your answer later - you can prepare what you’re going to say - less pressure! Try to use these phrases as much as you can and soon they’ll become automatic! Keep this list somewhere you can see it.

Useful phrases

  • Ok, Let’s start

Checking

  • What did you get for no.2?
  • What was your answer?
  • What do you think the answer is?
  • How about you?

Questioning

  • Why do you think so? Why not?
  • Do you agree with me / him / her?
  • Do we all agree?
  • Let’s move on to the next one

Agreeing/Disagreeing

  • I (don’t) think the answer is … because…
  • I (don’t) agree with you / him / her because…
  • Let’s agree to disagree!

Clarifying

  • What do you mean?
  • I didn’t hear you, could you repeat that?
  • What I mean is…./ What I’m trying to say is….

Persuading

  • Wouldn’t it be better if..?
  • Don’t you think..?
  • Do you really think..?

Interrupting

  • Could I just say something…?
  • Please let me finish…

The 4-point plan to give an opinion(properly!)

Practice giving your opinions in this way to avoid giving a very short answer

I think…

Because…

For example…

So…

I think the movie was exciting because there were a lot of special effects. For example the scene at the beginning where the character jumped from the airplane was awesome! So, for me it was definitely a great movie.

Because…

Give reasons for what you say! Don’t just give a one word or one sentence answer! Use because with everything you say!
