Learning English through cooking
“You are what you eat.” I really believe this. Foods nourish either body and mind. As a result, cooking is the most important things for me. I do not eat take-out or packaged foods. Despite spending much time on preparing foods, I almost always cook for lunch and dinner. A rich-nutrient meal for lunch and the light one for dinner. This routine activity becomes boring some times but I will find a new recipe and start cooking eagerly. This has many benefits.
First of all, while cooking, I learn English. I have to look new words up in a dictionary.I have to find a picture for a special ingredient because I do not know some of them. Pictures help me to learn faster and not to forget them easily. Some instructions are not easy to cook so I have to look for videos or read another instructions in order to understand better. That way, my listening and reading skills will improve and because of the importance of cooking, I have to learn new vocabularies or watch videos which is not easy to read or to listen to.
Second, I bring foods for my mind and body at the same time. I bring foods for my mind by learning English and bring a delicious meal for my body.
Finally, this kind of learning is motivating because it makes me happy. I could read the instructions and understand them. If I do not understand, I will cook wrongly. So, I have to be careful not to make mistakes and comprehend completely. Overcoming these difficulties bring happiness at the end.
To sum up, I think cooking is a great way to learn English. It helps to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Moreover, when you cook very well, people always ask how to cook it and you should explain or write the instructions. So, give it a try. It is really worthwhile.
