I need to know how to improve my listening

Jorge,
To improve your listening, you need to do two different types of listening. First is “intensive” listening, which is very careful with lots of repetition. Second is “extensive” listening, which means you listen to a lot of English even if you don’t understand everything.
For intensive listening, dictations are a good way to begin. (Go to http://www.teacherjoe.us/Dicts.html to try some dictations.) After you can do single sentences, try listening to very short stories or jokes. (Go to http://www.teacherjoe.us/Jokes.html to listen to some funny jokes.) You may need Real Player to listen to those files.
For extensive listening, there are thousands of great sites out there. You can go to http://www.esl-lab.com/ for lots of different topics. Or you can go to You Tube and watch videos on any topic you want. Just remember that with extensive listening your only goal is to improve over time. So, if you understand only 5% of a video today, that’s okay IF you understand 10% of that video next month.
Good luck!

As you mentioned, musics help us to learn English, so I found one of my favorite songs called Hello by Lionel Richie.
Have fun with English!

I’m just curious - how much can you understand? I have been thinking about making a video for students, introducing some of my favorite songs and explaining the meaning, some difficult words or expressions, and maybe some parts of the song to NOT use when speaking. Do you think that could be useful?

Absolutely! that is amazing. It is really great.
I always listen to my favorite English musics because I can recite them thousand times without being tired and it also helps me to speak better with better accent. So, this video that you are going to make is really GREAT!
The songs that you told us to listen to, I mean, John denver, the Beatles and Carpenters. I found their albums and listened to them. I understood some of them for example, Country Roads. I could uderstand 60 per cent of it. Then, I found the lyrics and once again I listened to it and recite it. The other days, I listened to it once again to make sure how much I can hear and understand. I do until I will be a master in hearing and I do not think the difficulty of a song be a problem for me by my personal method. Because, I always try to listen to every songs and speaks with different difficulty levels, from simple to difficult. Some time that I am really exhusted by Learning English, I tried simple one in order to get the motivation to continue and after that, I try the difficult one.
every songs that is your favorite is OK with me. I am looking forward to seeing the videos.
Thanks a lot,
Regards,

Nafis,
I am glad to hear you have tried some of the singers I mentioned! When I learned French, Japanese, and now Chinese, I learned songs to help me, too. Last summer I learned a bunch of Chinese songs. Then I went to “karaoke” with my friends and sang some of them. It was a lot of fun! I have a lot of trouble reading Chinese words, though, so it takes me a long time to learn one song. But I’m still trying!!

WoW!
You have learned three difficult languages. I have heard that Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to learn. WOW!
I am wondering if the methods that you mentioned in “how to learn English Language” help us to learn other languages or are just for learning English and we can not use them to learn other languages?

The method to learn one language should work with another language but with some small exceptions. For example, I think songs are good for any language, but better for English, where the natural speaking rhythm comes out clearly in songs, than for Chinese, where the “tones” of spoken language do NOT come out clearly in songs. The nature of each language must be taken into account when we decide how we will learn it.

I think music is one of the best ways that helps to learn English quickly. I love music and I can listen to it many many times. It is really interesting that some English songs are memorable for me. For example, Hello from Lionel Richie, my father listened to it when I was a little girl. I did not understand the song that time but I liked it very much. Now, I can understand and enjoy it much more than before. I can learn songs very quickly without forgetting and this is really good for me because I do not have a good memory. I forget very quickly. I can not imagine singing in public because it makes me nervous and also I do not have a good voice. I wish I had. I do not have talent in this area but I can play some musics. What was the result of Karaoke competition? I do not know what it looks like. How many contestants were in that competition? Was someone playing for you as you sang? Do you like Chinease musics? I have seen some Chinease performances. They were playing some special music instruments which we can not recognize them as a regular music instruments. They used glasses and some dishes to make sounds. That was interesting.
