More Free Rice!

A teacher from the U.S. just left a comment on my previous “Free Rice Update” post. Thanks Nancy! You can see how Nancy’s students have done by clicking below and reading the comments at the bottom:

It seems my students are a little shy about reporting what they have done. So far, we’re up to 9000 grains of rice. If you’ve been studying vocabulary through www.freerice.com, please tell me how much you’ve earned.

Another great charity site is AIDtoCHILDREN.com. It donates money to children in need through World Vision.

    Check it out at http://www.aidtochildren.com

    Hanane,

It is normal to see things as you go to sleep, when you are really learning a lot! It means more and more words are sinking into your brain even as you help hungry people around the world. Good work!

    Hanane,

By the way, I just saw your comment in Joe’s Cafe. Two things you should understand: 1) That Joe is not me. I think, but am not sure, that he is the owner of this site (English Club) but I am just an ordinary teacher who has an ordinary blog just like anybody else. 2) His question was a joke. Choosing between color film or black and white means that you, quite naturally, will NOT save the former prime minister.

I am not British, so I am not familiar with how most Brits feel about Gordon Brown, but this joke makes it seem as though NOBODY would EVER consider saving Gordon Brown. Instead, choosing the type of film is more important.

I have to admit that I laughed at this joke. What made it funny was the sudden switch at the end. All the words made it sound serious. It seemed so important. It was a matter of life and death. And then, suddenly, it’s just a question of film! I would have laughed harder had it been about George Bush…

    Hullo Dear Teacher,
1st, thank you for commenting on my comment and clarifying things.2nd, I want to tell you that I am no a native speaker of English, and I thaught that his Question is an expression the English use to express a general belief about things one is supposed to do whitout thinking or asking why. I was taken in the trap, wasn’t I?
    Best Regards

    Hi Hanane,

No, I don’t think you were taken in by the trap at all! The trap was to think seriously about the message and then suddenly change with the final question. I fell into that trap, which is why I thought it was funny. But you “stuck to your guns” (you didn’t change your opinion) right to the end. The whole post was serious and you didn’t let one sentence at the end stop you. Good for you!
