A new job…

 Hello Everybody,

I just finished the first week at my new job and I’ve been thinking about how important it is to enjoy your work. I can’t say I enjoyed the first week because I spent most of it either in meetings or observing other teachers to learn about the school’s approach to teaching. Next week I will actually start teaching, which will be much more interesting and fun for me.

I found two fascinating, but conflicting, quotes about work on the Internet this evening. First, writer David McCullough wrote, “Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love“.  This seems true, but how possible is it find work that you really love? More than 2000 years ago, Aristotle said “All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind“.   This ALSO seems true to me at times because, even though I love teaching, I don’t love working for someone else who tells me what to do and how to do it.

How do you feel about work? Is it something you love to do or something you just need to do? I’m looking forward to reading your comments!

    Dear teacher Joe,

Sometimes one can find his/ her ideal job but the job is different in reality. For example, I really liked to be a journalist. I really like to travel, to talk with different people from different cultures, to reflect people’s problem and etc. As a journalist my main duty is telling the truth and reflects events as they occur but media policies are different from what I was thinking. They manipulate and distort the truth in favour of a government or special groups of people. Particular policies are established that no one can change it. So, these working conditions have me think about what I was doing. Even though I liked being a journalist, I refused to do it. I decided to change my major and study another field. If I want to prepare a report, I would rather work as a freelance journalist.

I could not change these conditions so even though I found my passion, I lost my motivation. I think passion, motivation and perseverance are necessary for being successful in a job. I had passion but I lost my motivation. After a while, I lost my passion as well. Passion is necessary but is not enough.

I prefer to find a job that I really like to do because I spend eight hours of my time at work and time is gold. I do not want to waste my time in a job that I do not like. As a result, I am looking for a job that matches with my personality, expectations and values.

    Best regards,

    hullo dear teacher,
Having a work in our days is a necessity to satisfy one’s needs. As far as I’m concerned, I agree with both of the quotes. sure I will succeed if I practiced a job that I like because enjoying it will absolutely urge me to do my best to do a good job and consequently this will contribute in prospering and feeling at ease with a job to which you cencentrate more than half of your life, and not enjoying one’s job will only be a daily suffering.
    to be continued

But this does not mean that I won’t work unless I found a job that I like. Personally I did not like most of the jobs I practiced before, I just felt unmotivated about them because they really kill something that is beautiful inside, even the will to give or to live. I just found myself obliged to work since I have to. Now I have a job that I like and despite such a fact, sometimes I feel upset and depressed because of the job itself and its monotonous activity. finally, I want you to tell me what do you think about a job that you like and that will lead to nothing i.e. an ill paid job.
